Cultivating Creativity

Reading through this chapter I began to realize the similarities between the personality beginning described and my own. I feel that creative individuals spend most of there time struggling to find a balance between security and exploration. I am definitely a safe-keeper but have learned to push myself to take risks and put myself out there. Each day I push myself a little more to take chances, seize opportunities, try new things and hopefully learn more about myself along the way!

Cultivating Creativity

So what I understand from Chapter 5 is that creativity is business, and we can be creative anywhere at anytime. The book tells what creativity is about. According to the book, “Creativity is inherently unpredictable. Through creative thinking, old habits are broken and familiar patterns of thought are transformed. Anything can happen. Predicting the future based on past experience becomes inadequate creativity eludes capture.” The book also divides cultivating creativity into two steps to help people to be creative, goal setting and time management.

Adriana Fernandez

Hey Guys, I'm Adriana! I'm 19 years old and a freshman at UF. I grew up in South Florida and I am from a Latin background. I danced for 14 years and I am also a water polo player. I am a die hard soccer fan. Currently a graphic design major but may change before next fall. I love the beach, going to concerts and going dancing. Music and dance are a huge part of my life that I don't think could live without. Family is a huge part of my life and they have influenced the person I have become. My motto is to live, laugh and love with all you have and always dream big! -two artists that I recently came across and did some collaborative work are Clayton Cubitt and Tom Carden check them out!

5: Cultivating Creativity

I thought the variations on a theme idea was helpful. Not only can you produce a series but it also allows you to play with ideas. The example of Katsushika Hokusai's work demonstrates how one subject can be viewed from many angles. I also like how the chapter explains that researching precedents is appropriate - you're not cheating. I always felt that looking at other people's work was somewhat unethical, but as my professor always said, muscians first study other people's music before they produce their own.

Chapter 5: Cultivating Creativity

I was interested to find out that there are so many conditions that can be set up to encourage creativity. I learned how important it is to be open to new ideas and experiences and question and research unfamiliar topics. I was also surprised to read that in addition to being intuitive, a creative person must also thinks rationally and must find a fine balance between the two. It always seemed to me that creativity was more intuitive. I like the quotes the author used throughout the chapter, it helped me better understand the topics being discussed. I especially found the results of the study on teenagers who cannot stand solitude very interesting and it really shows how important it is to seek quite personal time.

I enjoyed reading all the goal setting strategies. I'm usually very organized and I like to set goals for myself, but this section showed me how important it is to understand your own strengths and weaknesses and choose compatible and reasonable goals accordingly.

Overall, I found the chapter enjoyable and informative. It was well organized and easy to read. =)

Cultivating Creativity

To be totally honest, I thought the chapter was a little self-help-y. It made some good points and I can appreciate that it was well presented and well organized which shows good writing, but when it got to the post-it exercise for setting goals, for example, I started feeling like it was a book suggested at a positive-thinking seminar. The clear organization used throughout the chapter shows promise to me, I hope that other chapters in the book deal with more specific, down-to-work subjects are as well put together as this one. I generally do agree with the points made and positive risk-taking mentality promoted and think that it is a good place to start for the semester.

Jeremiah Burton- A Post About Me

Hi Im Jeremiah Burton, I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I am nineteen years of age and hope to graduate from UF witha degree in Graphic Design. Some interesting facts about me, At the beginning of high school i was in a small time wrestling organization. Not the one with tights and mats but the one with gimmicks and steel chairs. After that i joined a rap group that I am still a part of to this day. For maybe two years now i have known how to drift cars, both automatic and stick shift. I would keep going but i might end up telling to much. Click here to see the link to a pretty cool Digital imaging artist.

Getting the book

Hale, I bought my book online and I still haven't received it yet, so I'm going to read up on the topics that you posted (by looking up articles online), and actually read the chapter when I get the book in. I'm sorry about that!

Ashley Schick

Hello! My name is Ashley Schick and I am a 4th-year student in printmaking and packaging science. I love to travel and I love to cook (combined they're even better). I'm not that familiar with digital artists, but I recently heard about this exhibition created by Victoria Vesna & James Gimzewski. It is a collaboration between a media artist and a nano-scientist documenting the metamorphosis of Blue Morpho butterflies. The exhibit is an installation of images and a viewer-sensitive audio track (that only plays when you are still and silent).

Christina Kwan

My name is Christina, and I come from Lake Worth (that's in South Florida). I am currently 20 years old and a sophomore majoring in drawing. I am also a Dancin' Gator (a student dance group), and I intern at the Thomas Center galleries downtown. I love all things creative, beautiful, and interesting. Two other things I love to do are go to concerts and buy new clothes. I am not too familiar with digital media programs, nor digital media artists. However, after some browsing, I found that I am really interested in Julia Steinkamp. I think this is because she uses her digital media in order to alter space, much alike the way I want to be able to do with my drawing and painting. A lot of her stuff seems somewhat mesmerizing. It has such fluidity, and often reminds me of the same awe we feel when we look at natural wonders. "Loop" is an installation she did that exemplifies exactly what interested me about her. You can find it here (scroll down about halfway).

Paul Pino

Hey all, my name is Paul. I'm a freshman (hopefully) sculpture major. My hobbies include making music (I'm the singer in a band from Miami) and video games. I take movies and music very serious and try to watch/listen to as many/much as I can possibly get my hands on.
As for digital artists, I've always found Digital Blasphemy to be a pretty cool site. It's mostly desktop stuff but I find the craft just to be so good.

Mykl Gormley

well lets see... my name is myk. i am a first year graphic design student... listening to music, watching movies, going out with friends, and drawing take up most of my time... every now and then school slides in there, too. i'm here at UF all the way from the wonderful state of maryland and as my mother was thrilled to find out im on a full academic scholarship... ummmm, yea

Sarah Davis

I am Sarah Elizabeth Davis and I am a Junior painting major. I enjoy almost anything except heights, negativity and sharks. My faith and my family are most important to me. I know close to nothing about digital arts and actually prefer creating art with my hands as opposed to a mouse. Regardless I am excited about learning more in this area especially with its growing relevance in the 21st century art world. After some research I found that I like the work of Jason Salavon. His distorted digital images and photographs look similar to an impressionistic style of painting. I especially enjoyed his "100 Special Moments" series where he took 100 images from the Internet, for example "Kids with Santa" and combined them all using a special formula including medium and mean. The results are quite interesting and his other amalgamations are just as beautiful. Check out the "Homes for Sale" and the class pictures series.

About me: Jason Kolesa

I'm looking forward to working with everyone this semester!

Nerina Martinez

Hi everyone!
My name is Nerina Martinez. I'm from Marco Island, Florida (on the SW coast). I'm a junior digital arts and science major. I love dancing, painting, going to the beach, boating, and pretty much anything else on the water and anything creative. I'm not too familiar with digital media artists, but after browsing through the list of artists on the syllabus and more on the web, I really like Jennifer Steinkamp's work. I've always been interested in architecture and she is able to portray this in her work. Also, her work is very vibrant and unique. Here's a link to her site: Jennifer Steinkamp.
I look forward to getting to know everyone this semester =)
